The Academician N. N. Andreev Acoustic Institute is the research organization where there are carried out the basic and applied research in the sphere of acoustics. In 1953 it was established in Moscow on the initiative of the academician N. N. Andreev on the basis of acoustic laboratory of Lebedev Physical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences (FIAN).
The Acoustic Institute is the leading research institute in the sphere of sound propagation in the ocean, analysis of the ocean noise of diverse origin.
The scientists of the Acoustic Institute have made a significant contribution to the creation and further development of hydro acoustic equipment of various applications. They have developed the fundamental theory of sound channel propagation in the ocean and have made experimentally verified discoveries of very-long-distance sound propagation in the deep sound channel, far-field regions of acoustic illumination and sound focusing. These discoveries made a revolution in the general physics understanding of the structure of the sound fields in the ocean and became fundamental for the development of hydro acoustic equipment. Even now such discoveries haven’t lost their topicality.
